On March 12, 2024, The Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA) hosted the JIIA Forum "For a Free World," inviting Mr. Margus Tsahkna, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Estonia, to discuss international affairs from an Estonian perspective. In this forum, Minister Tsahkna, while reflecting on Estonia's recent modern history, highlighted the importance of values such as freedom and democracy, especially in light of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. As a former defense minister, he provided a sober discussion on the challenges of applying international law and on the responses of the United Nations and the rest of the international community. He emphasized that the current war in Ukraine is not just a regional conflict but a fundamental challenge to international law, human rights, and the international order, urging nations to unite and seek effective responses to this challenge. The forum, rich in insights on the response to the war in Ukraine, saw many questions from participants and fostered active discussions.
