PACIFIC ECONOMIC COOPERATION COUNCIL (PECC)

PECC: In 1979 then Japanese Prime Minister Masayoshi Ohira proposed the "Pacific Basin Cooperation Concept," with the aim of maximizing the vast potential of this region. The first step toward turning this ideal into reality was taken in 1980, when the Pacific Community Seminar was convened in Canberra, Australia, with the participation of 11 Pacific Basin countries (Japan, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and the five original ASEAN countries) and a delegation from the Pacific island nations. It has since acted as a tripartite, non-governmental organization where representatives from government, academia and commerce can pool expertise and exchange views for promoting economic cooperation in the region. The seminar was given its present name, the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC) at its meeting held in Honolulu on January 22, 1992.

The PECC membership currently consists of 23 economies: Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Ecuador, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, the Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Chinese Taipei, Thailand, the United States, Vietnam, and the Pacific island nations.

In order to expand the scope of the organization's cooperative activities, various PECC task forces have presented the findings of their research to the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum.
