On June 14, 2024, the United Nations Information Centre, Tokyo (UNIC Tokyo) and the Japan Institute of International Affairs (JIIA) co-hosted a public webinar titled "Effective, Inclusive and Networked Multilateralism fit for the 21st Century" featuring Mr. Guy Ryder, UN Under-Secretary-General for Policy.

During the webinar, Under-Secretary-General Ryder discussed the upcoming "Summit of the Future" to be held in September at the UN Headquarters in New York, and the five Chapters of the 'Pact for the Future,' which is being negotiated in the inter-governmental process. The subsequent panel discussion, moderated by former NHK journalist and anchor Ms. Miki Ebara, was joined by panelists Prof. Mieko Nakabayashi, Professor at Waseda University, and Amb. Motohide Yoshikawa, Distinguished Professor at the International Christian University (former Ambassador of Japan to the UN). The panel discussion saw a lively exchange of opinions on how to enable collective action to address existential risks to humanity such as nuclear issues, climate change, and AI, as well as to bring the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) back on track, including mobilizing massive development financing, and to rebuild trust amid crises in multilateralism. Many questions from both in-person and online participants were raised and led to a broad and wide-ranging discussion.
